When a young musician tells a parent or teacher they don't like maths the parent or teacher often replied with the statement 'but music IS maths!'.
How true is this statement?

Given that 1 = 0
Add 1 to each side, equation is now 2 = 1
On the side with 2 there is myself and the Pope. Since 2 = 1 I am the pope.

It's the worst thing you can possibly say. When people say it and give their arguments with all the "But the interlapping of polyrhythms and meeting up after 7 bars!" and the "But two crotchets equals a minim! Don't you see?! Maths! 1 + 1 = 2!!!!!", I just wanna rape their children. Mainly because to an extent they're right. But they don't understand that when you're listening to music, you don't feel good when you sit there going "OH! THE BASS IS PLAYING 7/8 AND THE DRUMS ARE PLAYING 22/12!!!! IF MY CALCULATIONS ARE CORRECT THEY'RE GONNA MEET UP RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT NOW!" Stuff like that does make it interesting and can add to the emotional experience which is what makes music good. But shit... You can't possibly have any emotion about maths. Except maybe the pride of feeling smart for getting 100% on that test last week. But it's all just an elaborate scheme to make committed people feel smarter. Don't even talk to me about maths right now! I love it too much!

How can music be maths if you love one and hate the other? That's my main thing with the statement.

It can't be. And it's not. But a raisin is a dried grape. I like grapes but not raisins. But they're the same thing! They're just all different tasting. But that doesn't really relate to this. People apply maths to music when studying it, just as people apply English to law when studying that. They're not the same thing, just the logic you learn with maths can help when studying musical theory. Point is, when people say music is maths, they're wrong.

There are similar concepts behind them.
Look up sin waves! And intervals!
They're interconnected. Just like dick and pussy. But that doesn't mean I wanna have my tongue in both.

Along with maths having nothing to do with music numbers are in everything. Including music. But that's not really maths, it's just numbers.

And music can variate, you can have a jam, and it chops and changes and flows into other things, and there isn't a mathematical sequence to which things are occurring, it's all spontaneity. You can't do that in maths.

Yeah, but if you like Weezer you're also a discredit to music, maths and all things human and living, so
